The Answer to Air Pollution

Air pollution is a major problem in many cities around the world. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that air pollution causes 7 million deaths each year. The problem of air pollution is only getting worse. In the United States, for example, the level of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air has increased by 20% since 1990. Particles having diameters ≤2.5 microns are so small that they can enter the bloodstream and cause serious health problems. The effects of air pollution are not just limited to adults. Children are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution. In fact, a study by the American Lung Association found that children who live in areas with high levels of air pollution are more likely to have asthma, respiratory infections, and learning disabilities.

Research has shown that some of the smallest and lightest particles have a higher concentration of biological agents than larger and heavier particles. Elexure has designed an Electrostatic Precipitator that can filter out the smallest and lightest particles with efficiencies similar to most HEPA filters. It can be used to filter out high concentrations present in fire smoke or other emergency situations. It is possible that captured viruses can remain active for some time on HEPA filter surfaces because there is no mechanism in place to inactivate them. Our ESPs have one method of ensuring that captured viruses are inactivated together with an additional backup system, if required, in high-contamination environments.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), homes offices, schools and hospitals are 5x more polluted, and we want to do everything we can to significantly reduce this. Our air purifiers work 24/7 to help remove harmful pollutants from the air you breathe while you sleep, work and play. The Clean Air Act requires the EPA to set a national air quality standard for each pollutant. When it comes to ground-level ozone, which causes smog, EPA found that it has been causing numerous respiratory problems, aggravating pre-existing health conditions such as asthma, emphysema, and other lung diseases, and has been linked to accelerated ageing of the skin by increasing the production of sunburn cells in the skin.
One of the most promising solutions is Elexure’s Electrostatic Precipitation Units. These machines use a high-voltage electric field to capture pollutants from the air. Our units have been shown to be as effective as HEPA filters at removing pollutants from the air.

So, How & When?

It is generally estimated that it would take several decades to completely purify the air if we took aggressive action. For example, the Clean Air Act in the United States has been in place for over 50 years, and it has made significant progress in reducing air pollution. However, there is still more work to be done.
Some of the things that we could do to act on air pollution and purify our air include switching to cleaner sources of energy, such as renewable energy sources; investing in public transportation and other ways to reduce our reliance on cars; improving fuel efficiency standards for cars and other vehicles; reducing industrial emissions; and planting trees and other vegetation to help absorb pollutants.

It is important to note that there is no single solution to the problem of air pollution. We need to take a comprehensive approach that includes a variety of measures. However, Elexure’s Electrostatic Precipitation solution is a huge step towards the clean future that we deserve.
